2017 SID/DSCC Business Conference Monday, May 22, 2017 LA Convention Center
Mark Verrall SVP, R&D, Display Materials Merck
Abstract: For over 40 years, Merck has been the technology and market leader in liquid crystals (LCs) for displays, used in all types of LCD screens from large size public displays, TV’s, monitors, and mobile devices. Merck continues to invest heavily in R&D for future generations of displays and we introduce an exciting range of innovative new materials that enable the next leaps forward in display performance.
Our latest developments in Liquid Crystals include new fast-switching LC modes, materials for free-form and flexible applications, as well as completely new applications outside of the conventional display market.
Merck also offers the so-called “full stack” of materials for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), considering and evaluating the influence of all relevant materials in the device. Merck’s OLED materials comprise both vapor-based as well as solution-based applications.
Merck also develops spherical and rod-shaped quantum materials which can be used within LCD backlight units, or as display layers to increase light throughput (e.g. QD pixel color converter).
Our organic TFT materials can enable the printing of high performance TFT arrays even on low cost and low melting point plastics, and therefore open the door to development of fully flexible substrates and future plastic-based displays.
Furthermore Merck’s fine patterning photoresists and siloxanes for high resolution photolithography and planarization of TFT backplanes, complete a comprehensive product portfolio for an enhanced visual experience in every aspect of next generation displays.
