LCD TV Panel Price Update Confirms Price Peak

Our latest update and forecast of LCD TV prices confirms our view of one month ago that prices are peaking in June or July 2021 and will decline for the rest of the year. The demand surge, which resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, has eased and industry supply has caught up to demand. Even with the declines in the second half, prices at year-end will remain higher than they were in December 2020 and dramatically higher than their all-time lows.

Glassmaker Earnings – NEG, AGC and Comparison

After Corning reported its Q1’21 financial results two weeks ago, its two Japanese competitors reported last week. We review the results of NEG and AGC and compare the results of all three manufacturers. NEG’s results beat analysts’ consensus expectations for revenues of ¥71.1B and net income of ¥3.3B. AGC benefited from strong demand in its automotive and architectural glass segments and rising prices in its chemical business segment to improved profits in Q2’21.

The expanded product range for OLED TV combined with wider availability and increasing LCD TV prices led to a terrific quarter for OLED TV sales, according to the latest update of the DSCC Quarterly Advanced TV Shipment and Forecast Report, now available to subscribers. Strong demand for expensive home theater systems from pandemic-constrained consumers led to near triple-digit Y/Y percentage increases in shipments of Advanced TVs, with OLED categories faring even better.

DSCC Releases Flash Edition of Quarterly OLED Shipment Report

DSCC has released the Q3’21 OLED Shipment Report – Flash Edition to subscribers. Starting in Q2’21, we introduced an expedited “flash” deliverable in advance of the full report file. This flash edition analyzes quarterly and annual units through 2022 by application, panel supplier, brand and form factor. In Q2’21, OLED shipments decreased by 10% Q/Q but saw 36% Y/Y growth. We expect that Q3’21 will increase 26% Q/Q and increase 28% Y/Y due to recent OLED smartphone launches by Samsung and expected launches by Apple and Google. We expect Q4’21 to increase 4% Q/Q and decline 1% Y/Y compared to Q4’20, when Apple launched the iPhone 12 series later than normal.

Advanced TV Market to Exceed $50 Billion in 2026

Advanced TV shipments are expected to grow by 46% Y/Y in 2021, and by a 22% CAGR through 2026 to 43.1M units generating $52B in revenue, according to the latest update to DSCC’s Quarterly Advanced TV Shipment and Forecast Report, now available to subscribers. This report covers the worldwide premium TV market, including the most advanced TV technologies: WOLED, QD Display, QDEF, Dual Cell LCD and MiniLED with 4K and 8K resolution. The report looks at current and future TV shipments and revenues by technology, region, brand, resolution and size, and forecasts the growth of all these technologies. Last week we covered the most recent historical results and this week, we will cover our updated forecast. In this report, we define an “Advanced TV” (capitalized) as any TV with an advanced display technology feature, including all OLED TVs, 8K LCD TVs and all LCD TVs with quantum dot technology.

DSCC Upgrades Foldable Forecast as Chip Shortage Causes Brands and Panel Suppliers to Emphasize More Expensive Devices

DSCC released a flash report last week as part of its Quarterly Foldable/Rollable Display Shipment and Technology Report. The flash report features a pivot table with monthly foldable smartphone panel procurement by brand, panel supplier, size, resolution, cover material, refresh rate, backplane, chipset supplier and other features by month through 2021 and by year for 2022. A few developments have caused us to upgrade our foldable smartphone panel shipment/procurement numbers by 14% in 2021 to 10.4M and by 16% to 18.7M in 2022 as shown below. As a result, we now see foldable smartphone panels up 220% in 2021 and 80% in 2022.
