2018 SID/DSCC Automotive Display Market Conference Monday, May 22, 2018 LA Convention Center
The purpose of the SID Automotive Display Market Conference (ADMC) is to explore business and market issues facing the display industry as it grows in all automotive and vehicle applications. We recommend a title of “Safety, Utility, Ubiquity” given the opportunities for strong growth in this sector for the display industry. The SID 2018 ADMC seeks to build on the success of the 2017 ADMC and the ongoing SID Metro Detroit Vehicle Displays Symposium with a 3/4-day conference oriented to the business and market aspects of automotive displays. We anticipate that, as in 2017, the ADMC will be coupled with an automotive track in the technical symposium to form a complete overview of industry developments that will be attractive to display makers, automotive suppliers, OEMs, and analysts for both the display and automotive industries.
11:10 – 12:40 Session 1: The Opportunity in Automotive Displays
11:10 – 12:10 Keynote Addresses (2)
12:10 – 12:30 Market Opportunity
The Keynote Addresses will be intended to set the stage for the conference. The first keynote will be from an automotive OEM describing the vision for how displays of the future will be integrated into the automobile design, and how displays contribute to a successful product, both in today’s vehicle landscape and in the autonomous vehicles of the future. Targeted presenters for the first keynote include automotive interior design executives from Audi, BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, GM.
The second keynote will be from a Tier 1 supplier describing their vision for displays and interactivity, and how they integrate displays into the information systems of the vehicle, providing the audience with an understanding of the system design process which in automotive is so much longer than for typical consumer electronics. The presentation will also address how interactivity will change as the industry shifts towards autonomous vehicles. Targeted presenters for the 2nd keynote include executives involved in instrumentation and interactivity for Tier 1 suppliers such as Continental, Robert Bosch, Denso and Harman International.
The market opportunity presentation will be from a leading analyst in the automotive electronics space. The presentation will describe the current and future landscape of the automobile market with product and geographic segmentation, including the issue of autonomous vehicles. Then the presenter will describe the market opportunities for the three areas of interest for conference participants: flat panel displays, touch panels and heads-up displays. Target presenters for the market opportunity presentation include analysts from Strategy Analytics, JD Power, IHS, Display Supply Chain Consultants and others.
12:30 – 1:30 Lunch
1:30 – 3:00 Session 2: Flat Panel Displays Reshape the Auto Interior
Session 2 is intended to review the unique issues and opportunities for flat panels in automotive applications. Presenters will describe display innovations targeted at the automotive market, the advantages and trade-offs of technology choices and at least one presenter will describe the outlook for OLED displays in the automotive market. Targeted Presenters include Tier 1 System Integrators as named in the keynote session above, industry analysts as named above, display makers such as LGD, JDI, Innolux, and Tianma, optical film makers such as 3M and Nitto, and materials companies like Corning and Asahi. The session will be composed of five 15-minute presentations, followed by a 15-minute Q&A session.
3:00 – 3:15 Break
3:15 – 4:25 Session 3: Heads-up Displays and Augmented Reality
Session 3 will address the landscape and potential for Heads-Up Displays in the automotive application. The session will begin with an automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier laying out the unique issues for HUD, including the successes and failures (or incomplete successes) of past HUD offerings. Display makers representing competing technology choices in this area (LCD, DLP, others) will describe the advantages and challenges of competing display technologies in this application. Target speakers include automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers as named above, and HUD display makers including Daqri, Nippon Seiki, Panasonic, Pioneer and JDI. The session will be composed of three or four 15-minute presentations, followed by a Q&A session.
4:25 – 5:30 Session 4: Displays in Autonomous Vehicles
Session 4 will start with an afternoon keynote presentation from a speaker with a role in the vision of bringing autonomous vehicles to market. Target companies will include Google, Tesla, and Uber, as well as the OEMs listed above, as well as analyst groups such as Deloitte, Strategy Analytics, McKinsey, and IHS Markit. The keynote will address the likely timeline for semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles, and the role of displays in both enabling the new advances and addressing passenger interaction in an autonomous vehicle world.
