2017 SID/DSCC Automotive Display Conference Tuesday, May 23, 2017 LA Convention Center
Jonathan Kahl Senior Research Scientist, SEMS Laboratory 3M Corporate R&D
Abstract: Important and non-obvious advances in product design can be realized by combining expertise in perception science, material science, and manufacturing. Increasingly it is the perceptual experience that dictates whether a product is preferred and accepted by consumers. Perceptual science includes several sensory modalities which include vision and feel (haptics). Our initial work has focused on visual perception where we developed scientifically based metric on the visual quality of displays (Display Quality Score) and also in predictive models for human attention (Visual Attention Model). More recently, 3M has researched haptic perception and investigated the material properties that influence customer preference in terms of how something feels. Just as a good visually engineered product can increase purchasing decisions, an annoying or unwanted feel of a product can detract from consumer preference and directly affect sales. There is a growing body of research demonstrating various material properties can be used to predict user preference for specific applications. This presentation will present an overview of the work and capabilities of 3M’s Corporate Research Laboratory and review other research that investigates the relationship between material properties and haptic preference. Finally, novel 3M solutions to customers can come to fruition by combining expertise in perception science, material science, and manufacturing. .
Bio: Jonathan is currently a Human Factors Specialist in 3M’s Software, Electronic and Mechanical Systems (SEMS) Corporate Research Laboratory. Our laboratory supports technology development across 3M’s five Business Groups: Industrial, Healthcare, Safety and Graphics, Electronics and Energy, and Consumer. My research in 3M focuses on understanding the perceptual (e.g., haptics) property requirements for 3M product and technology development.
