Development of BD Cell and Its Applications

Display with perfect picture is the everlasting appeal for human being’s eyes. Nowadays, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) dominates the display market, and AM-OLED takes a large share of mobile display, but still struggles for cost and life time in large size field, while micro-LED is under developing. Comparing with the LCD display, the prominent point of LED is their true black at dark state, while the performance of lower gray scale is not as good as expected for its brightness is proportional to the driving current. So it is reasonable to think out that LCD with ultra-high contrast would be the best solution for perfect display performance. Thanks to the optical valve characteristics of LCDs, we can improve the contrast ratio dramatically with dual-cell structure. BOE exhibited its 65〞 dual-cell sample at SID 2018, and has gone into mass production in 2019, which was called as BD cell by BOE for its great performance at dark state and lower gray scale. The BD cell TV has attracted extensive attention of industrial players and professional users, and won Display of the Year award of DIA (Display Industry Award) of SID in 2020. BD cell can’t be produced by simply laminating the two cells, and some issues should be overcome, such as moire mura, lower transmittance, counter shadow etc. In this presentation, I will introduce our efforts on the design of BD cell, the specific materials developed for BD cell, the algorithm and the driving circuits. Applying these technologies, we have also developed a series of products, including high-end TV, professional monitor and automotive display, with sizes ranging from about 12.3〞 FHD to 110〞 8K 120Hz. We believe that the BD cell technology and its applications will bring great interest to display industry.

Biography

Dr. Shao Xibin, Doctor of science and research professor, graduated from Changchun Institute of Physics (Chinese Academy of Sciences) in 1998, majored in condensed matter physics. From October 2000 to March 2003, Dr. Shao served as a COE researcher in Tohoku University.

Presently, Dr. Shao serves as SVP and Chief Product Officer of BOE Display and Sensor Business Group. Dr. Shao used to be the fourth Secretary General of LCD Branch of China Physics Society, a special expert of panel display in the program of “863”, a national program of science and technology in “the Fifth National Program”, and a visiting professor in Beijing Jiaotong University and Fuzhou University.

Dr. Shao has studied LCD technology since the beginning of 1990’s and used to be responsible for many a few projects of “national 863 Program”. His study includes LCD technology, a-Si and p-Si TFT, OLED technology and e-paper display technology.
